Whispers Off the Charts at Oakland
Three acts top, beginning with local boy Lenny Williams of Tower of Power fame - followed by Stephanie Mills - and climaxing with 1964 The Tribute. Lenny Williams had been added to the ticket late, but he opened up strong, singing old hits (You're Still a Young Man) and new ones. I was pleased to hear him singing the blues, too. He is a treasure. Each act had plenty of time to sing. Stephanie Mills had the pipes and sounded beautiful, esp. in her renditions of I'll Be There and Home. Her voice is incredible, rich and low. A note: the Paramount's acoustics are not good. When we came in, Lenny Williams band was playing so loud that it made my throat vibrate. Stephanie Mills mentioned having 10 hits, but then she sang some loud fast & not really musical songs, and jumped up and down a lot. I wish she had concentrated more on the crooning, because that is her strength. (Yes, I did cry during Home - what an evocative song!) Now, on to the Whispers. Perfection! They were all in sky blue from their shoes & sox on up. Nick Caldwell is sick (praying for his recovery from whatever it is that ails him) so he sat on a stool for most of the act. But I can't really say he "sat." No, he danced on that stool. The Whispers have so many hits, and they sang a good range of old (Olivia the Slave) and new (Butter). For such a small venue, I'd expect the sound techs to set things up better than that. I wish they felt confident enough in their fans to share one of their newer Christian songs (Did You Know?) - we would have cheered them on. As it was, we sang along to everything and when they turned the microphone our way, Oakland was in tune and sounded good. He sang, and his feet flew, just like Leaveil Degree. Long live Nick, Leaveil, Walter, and Scotty! You can't beat their soulful harmonies and the lyrics of their songs are beautiful, too. And he didn't stint. He sang at least 8 songs - not medleys, either.
